The story takes place in 1895 and is based on true events. One of the things I struggled with in writing this work of historical fiction was how to deal with the tension between fidelity to the time period (without which, the story would not ring true) and the risk of offending the reader with language and mores that were common at the time but are unacceptable today. I have included a Word of Caution at the beginning of the book.
